, b. 1939
Over nearly six decades, William Eggleston has forged a distinctive photographic vision that elevates the everyday through masterful use of color, form, and composition. His poetic images transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, resisting fixed interpretation. Eggleston’s groundbreaking 1976 solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York—curated by John Szarkowski—was one of the museum’s first devoted to color photography. Though initially controversial, the show and its accompanying catalogue, William Eggleston’s Guide, became pivotal in establishing color photography as a serious artistic medium.Born in Memphis and raised in Sumner, Mississippi, Eggleston studied at Vanderbilt University, Delta State College, and the University of Mississippi. He joined David Zwirner in 2016, where notable solo exhibitions have included The Democratic Forest (2016), 2 1/4 (2019, London), True Stories (2021, with John McCracken), The Outlands (2022, New York), and The Last Dyes (2025, Los Angeles).Since the 1970s, his work has been shown in major institutions worldwide, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Barbican Gallery, Museum Ludwig, and documenta IX. The Whitney Museum of American Art and Haus der Kunst organized Democratic Camera (2008), a landmark retrospective that traveled internationally. More recent surveys include exhibitions at C/O Berlin (2023), Fundación MAPFRE, Barcelona, and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris.Eggleston has received numerous honors, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1975), the ICP Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement (2004), and the French Order of Arts and Letters (2016). His work resides in major museum collections worldwide.Founded in 1992, the Eggleston Artistic Trust preserves and promotes his legacy under the direction of his sons, Winston Eggleston and William Eggleston III. The Eggleston Art Foundation, established in 2019 in Memphis, serves as a research center and archive dedicated to his life and work.
