Vanessa Raw (b. 1984, Hexham, UK) is a British painter whose practice interlaces intimacy, mythology, and the natural world. Drawing inspiration from Greek and Mexican mythologies, she creates evocative scenes where women and animals inhabit enchanted landscapes that feel at once ancient, symbolic, and dreamlike. Her figures often dissolve into their surroundings, merging with earth, sky, and vegetation in compositions rich with allegorical fauna and flora.Working with a heightened, luminous palette, Raw evokes moments suspended between waking and dreaming—spaces where reality softens and symbolism takes hold. Animals appear as guiding presences: birds hint at liberation and transcendence, while deer evoke grace, guardianship, and quiet strength. Many of her landscapes stem from photographs taken on her daily runs, a ritualistic and meditative practice that roots her work in lived experience. Through this process, the natural world becomes a conduit for imagination, transforming observed terrain into poetic, otherworldly realms.
