Sebastião Salgado is an acclaimed Brazilian photographer and photojournalist renowned for his powerful black-and-white images that document the human condition, social injustice, and the majesty of the natural world. Trained originally as an economist, Salgado turned to photography in the 1970s, driven by a deep desire to portray the lives and struggles of people around the globe with empathy and dignity.Over the past five decades, Salgado has undertaken long-term projects of immense scope, including Workers (1993), Migrations (2000), and Genesis (2013) — each series exploring humanity’s relationship with labor, displacement, and the planet. His work, often monumental in both scale and emotional gravity, reflects a profound commitment to social and environmental justice.Salgado’s photographs have been exhibited in major museums worldwide, from the Centre Pompidou in Paris to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1998, he and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, founded the Instituto Terra, a reforestation and environmental education project in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, embodying his belief in the possibility of renewal and hope. With a distinctive visual language marked by chiaroscuro and compassion, Sebastião Salgado transforms documentary photography into a poetic testament to resilience, humanity, and the beauty of our shared world.
