, b. 1951
Sally Mann is an acclaimed American photographer celebrated for her hauntingly beautiful and deeply personal imagery. Born in Lexington, Virginia, Mann’s work often explores themes of family, memory, mortality, and the Southern landscape. She first gained wide attention in the 1990s with her series Immediate Family, a candid and lyrical portrayal of her children that challenged conventions around intimacy and innocence in art.Over the decades, Mann’s practice has evolved to encompass landscape and portrait photography that reflects both her technical mastery and poetic sensibility. Using large-format cameras and experimental processes such as wet-plate collodion, she imbues her images with a sense of timelessness and fragility. Her later series, including What Remains and Deep South, continue to probe the intersections of beauty, decay, and history.Mann’s work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art, and she has received numerous honors, including the Guggenheim and NEA fellowships. Her 2015 memoir Hold Still was a finalist for the National Book Award.
