Through quiet, luminous scenes drawn from everyday life, Jess Allen transforms the personal into the universal, evoking emotions of longing, stillness, and contentment. Her paintings, subtly altered through doctored details—blank book pages, echoes of earlier works—reveal themselves as composites of memory and invention. By layering photographic sources with imagined fragments, Allen explores the elusive nature of time and recollection.Like memories, shadows serve as intangible records of presence and absence. Allen wields them with precision, often to imply subjects that exist just beyond the frame. In doing so, she collapses the distance between subject and spectator, inviting an intimate sense of recognition and connection.Allen studied at Camberwell College of Arts and the Falmouth School of Art, and has presented solo exhibitions in London and New York.
