Over the course of a five-decade career, Jennifer Bartlett has been variously described as a painter, printmaker, and installation artist, though her most iconic works seamlessly integrate all three disciplines. She is best known for her vibrant paintings on baked enamel steel plates, which she arranges in grid formations. Each plate functions simultaneously as an autonomous artwork and as a component of a larger, unified composition. In addition to these signature works, Bartlett has explored a wide range of media, including pencil, ink, conté, oil pastel, gouache, drypoint, aquatint, screen printing, woodcut, and lithography. She earned her MFA from Yale University, where she studied alongside artists such as Richard Serra, Brice Marden, and Nancy Graves. Early in her career, she was particularly influenced by Sol LeWitt’s essay Paragraphs on Conceptual Art, which helped shape her rigorous yet expansive approach to making art.
