Hernan Bas is celebrated for his bold, expressionistic practice that spans painting, video, installation, and works on paper. His art delves into themes of desire, adventure, and adolescence, weaving together narratives inspired by classical poetry, religious mythology, and the sensuality of Gothic and Romantic literature. Bas’s large-scale compositions—populated by androgynous young men set amid lush, dreamlike landscapes—employ vivid color palettes and fantastical imagery to reimagine classical painting traditions through a distinctly queer and contemporary lens.A graduate of the New World School of the Arts, Bas has exhibited widely across the globe, with shows in New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, Zürich, and Hong Kong. His work is held in major public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Rubell Museum, the Saatchi Gallery, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others.
