Charles Gaines creates systems-based, conceptual artworks that span drawing, photography, installation, and sculpture. His practice investigates the tension between objectivity and subjectivity, exploring how numerical systems influence our perceptions of language, politics, aesthetics, and identity.Gaines is best known for his grid-based paintings, a body of work he began in the 1970s. In these compositions, he deconstructs images—often of faces, trees, or other recognizable forms—into individual, numbered squares of color, which he then meticulously transfers onto sheets of acrylic. Though the resulting images appear abstract at first glance, the figurative subjects remain perceptible, prompting reflection on how the human mind constructs meaning from ordered patterns.Over the course of his career, Gaines has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions worldwide and has presented work at the Venice Biennale in both 2007 and 2015. His pieces have achieved six-figure results at auction and are held in major public collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Hammer Museum, among others.
