Philip-Lorca diCorcia (b. 1951, Hartford, Connecticut) is an American photographer whose work bridges the worlds of documentary and staged photography. Known for his meticulously composed yet seemingly spontaneous images, diCorcia explores the tension between fact and fiction, public and private life, and the constructed nature of contemporary experience. After earning his MFA from Yale University in 1979, diCorcia began creating photographs that blended the everyday with the cinematic. His breakthrough series Hustlers (1990–92) portrayed male sex workers in Los Angeles with a mix of documentary realism and formal, painterly lighting, transforming social observation into psychological portraiture. Subsequent series such as Streetwork (1993–99), Heads (2000–01), and A Storybook Life (2003) continued this exploration of narrative and chance, using controlled lighting and composition to turn ordinary encounters into moments of quiet drama.DiCorcia’s photographs often reveal the theatricality of modern existence — the ways people perform themselves in both private and public spaces. His work invites viewers to question the boundaries between truth and artifice, photography and cinema, intimacy and anonymity. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including Tate Modern (London), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and is represented in major collections worldwide. DiCorcia has received numerous honors, including Guggenheim and NEA fellowships. He lives and works in New York City.
