Imi Knoebel
|
Imi Knoebel is known for his minimalist hybrids of painting and sculpture that rigorously explore the interplay between color, form, and structure. Rooted in nonrepresentational abstraction, Knoebel’s practice extends and reinterprets the modernist legacies of Joseph Beuys, Kazimir Malevich, and the Bauhaus. His work is characterized by serial compositions, pared-down geometric forms, and a restrained yet vivid use of color, often realized through industrial materials such as Masonite and aluminum.Knoebel studied under Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and previously at the Werkkunstschule Darmstadt, where he engaged with the pedagogical principles of László Moholy-Nagy. These formative influences shaped his lifelong commitment to formal experimentation and material clarity. While best known for his sculptural paintings, Knoebel’s multifaceted practice also encompasses drawing, photography, slide projections, and installation. Over the decades, he has exhibited widely in major cities including Berlin, New York, Paris, Zürich, Tokyo, London, Vienna, and Rome. His work is represented in numerous prominent collections, among them the Essl Museum, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Museo Reina Sofía, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.Recognized as a leading figure in postwar abstraction, Knoebel’s works continue to command significant attention in the art market, with examples achieving six-figure prices at auction.
