Faith Ringgold

AmericanAmerican
, b. 1930
Faith Ringgold’s vivid paintings and story quilts chronicle how the social and political transformations of the 20th century have shaped the African American experience. Blending text, portraiture, and the traditions of African American story quilts with visual references to Nigerian and Ghanaian masks, Ringgold has developed a richly layered and unmistakably personal visual language. Her practice extends beyond painting and textiles to include sculpture, performance, and award-winning children’s books.Throughout her career, Ringgold has woven powerful narratives exploring history, violence, power, and Black identity, infusing them with both urgency and imagination. Her work has been exhibited widely—from New York, Paris, and London to Los Angeles and Chicago—and is held in major public collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
