Chantal Joffe is known for her expressive, textural portraits that portray women with a disarming blend of vulnerability, humor, and strength. Drawing inspiration from fashion magazines, personal photographs, and pornography, Joffe translates the poses and gestures of her subjects into loose, gestural compositions that balance immediacy with emotional depth. Her paintings—often compared to the stylized portraiture of Alice Neel, Max Beckmann, and Alex Katz—capture the complexities and contradictions of female identity, appearing at once casual and psychologically charged.Joffe earned her MA from the Royal College of Art in 1994 and has since exhibited internationally in New York, London, Seoul, Milan, Venice, and Paris. Her work is held in prominent collections, including those of the Royal College of Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Saatchi Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. In 2017, she was commissioned to create a major public artwork for the new Whitechapel railway station in London.
